According to a new study, the health experts have issued a warning that the countries need to look at their regulatory controls in order to fight the global obesity epidemic. They said the government should reconsider the regulatory controls so that people choose healthier foods.
In a statement Christina Roberto of the Nutrition Department at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston and lead author of the study said, more focus should be put on the children as they are in an enormous threat. Roberto said, There are a number of factors that work against us when we try to avoid unhealthy food . He then added, We are really programmed to like high fat, high sugar, high salt foods and there are plenty of them available. We have psychological vulnerabilities. The way foods are marketed, the portion sizes we're given, being inundated with food messages all the time, that makes us want to overeat .
He said most of the countries convenient foods are cheaper than the healthier foods. Though the experts are saying that countries are showing slow response, some countries adopted and tested some ideas, which includes: commercials advertisement directed towards children under the age of 13 is banned in Quebec. This law was upheld by their supreme court recently. This is mandatory in some countries to provide nutritional foods in schools. It is mandatory in some countries to provide food labels which is easier to understand. Governments are also encouraging the buying of local products from the farmers markets.
In some parts of the world governments want to tax health related food less than the junk foods. They want to restrict display and promotion of foods like candies. Health experts want schools to give nutrition education like cooking. In a statement Roberto said, though there are shortage of ideas, governments are coming forward with plans and regulations to fight the obesity epidemic.
