Communications-services provider Level 3 Communications (LVLT) appointed Director James O. Ellis, Jr., as chairman, succeeding Walter Scott Jr., who previously had announced plans to retire. Ellis has been a member of the company's board since March 2005. He also serves as chairman of the board's Classified Business and Security Committee and is a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee. From May 2005 until May 2012, Ellis was the president and CEO of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. In late November 2013, the company had said Scott intended to retire from the board effective with its May annual meeting, which was held Thursday, and named Ellis as the planned successor. Scott, who was 82 years old at the time of the November release, served as chairman since 1979 and was a member of the board since 1964. LVLT was inactive in recent pre-market trading after closing Thursday at $44.28, near the 52-week high of $44.77 it reached during Thursday's session.
