The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has cried out that Americans are consuming way too much salt than the daily recommended allowance provided by the regulatory bodies, with 80% of excessive salt intake coming from packaged and processed foods.
And to make the matter worse, most of the offending packaged products are packaged meat and pasta where 80% of these contain excessive amounts of salts above what is stipulated in federal guidelines. In 70% of excessive sodium levels in packaged foods, pizzas, cold cuts, and soups were found to contain unhealthy amounts of salt.
The CDC further disclosed that nearly 77% of the excessive salt consumed by Americans comes through take-out food, restaurant meals, and other packaged foods, contrary to home-cooked meals which contains very moderate levels of salt.
Americans consume an average of 3,500 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day (excluding salt added at the table). But the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day. About six in 10 adults should further limit sodium to 1,500 mg a day, states CDC in its official report.
CDC made an attempt to determine whether the chances of an individual developing high blood pressure is related to excessive salt levels in packaged products produced in particular geographical locations, but the health agency could not find any links in high salt levels and products manufactured in certain regions.
Although most of the regional differences found did not have a clear direction or contributor, some may relate to regional variations in the popularity of specific types of products within a food category, CDC said.
Excessive salt intake is dangerous for people suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and other related health complications that could cause grievous health challenges, causing health authorities to insist on reducing sodium intake at all times.
