Herman takes apart first round of Honda Classic

In the Honda Classic American journeyman Jim Herman was the unlikely first round leader at the Honda Classic after shooting a five-under-par 65 as world number one Rory McIlroy struggled at blustery PGA National on Thursday.Jim Herman fired a 5-under 65 during a windy first round on Thursday and he holds a 1-shot lead at the Honda Classic. Herman was apart of the morning groups, but his 5-under 65 ended up holding strong at the end of the day.

Wind takes the part in the HONDA Classic. A ruthless wind with flurry that approached 35 mph provided a rude welcome to just about everyone Thursday at the Honda Classic except for Jim Herman, who somehow made it around PGA National without a bogey for a 5-under 65 and a one-shot lead.

But the leading Herman didn't mind the wind, though he moved to south Florida more than a decade ago and was surprised earlier in the week when there wasn't hardly any wind at all. Even with a 65, it still wasn't easy. He twice saved par from the fairway and rolled in a 35-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

In a statement Herman, 37, has never won on the PGA Tour and was not even sure of entry into the tournament on Monday but he handled the tough conditions superbly as he stayed bogey-free while recording five birdies on the Champion Course.

Besides Patrick Reed and three-time major champion Padraig Harrington both finished day one at 3-under 67 along with Martin Flores, and the trio is tied for third.

In the game the two-time British Open winner Padraig Harrington of Ireland, who has slumped to 297th in the world rankings, recovered from an early bogey at the second en route to a 67 that left him two shots off the pace.

And the World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, making his season debut on the PGA Tour, struggled with the windy conditions at times on his way to a 3-over 73. He is tied for 79th alongside defending champion Russell Henley and 21 others.
