Lately, a controversy has erupted over the internet on optical illusion. A picture that presents pixels from one of Einstein s pictures is intermingled with that of Monroe. By looking at the picture you cannot immediately decide if you are looking at a picture of Albert Einstein or Marilyn Monroe.

It appears that the confusion has something to do with the distance between you and the image. The strength of your eyes also come into play and according to experts if you have a good sight, you will be seeing a different image than someone with a poor eyesight viewing the same image from the same distance.

Aude Oliva of MIT developed the test with help from Philippe G Schyns of University of Glasgow. According to them, a single glance at this illusion is adequate to determine your ability to define the contrast details in the picture as well read the spatial frequency of your eyes.

In this image if you are seeing Monroe instead of Einstein, chance are that you have a bad eye sight. If however, you see Einstein, you can try increasing the distance between you and the image or squinting your eyes. In the process you can see Marilyn Monroe, if the image gets blurry enough.

Hybrid is the special type optical illusion that has gone into the making of this picture. Gregory Brown and Moffit have posted the picture on the internet via a video on You Tube on April 2. The video has gone viral with over 2,000,000 views.

A high spatial frequency (when you see Einstein) indicates that your eyes have the ability to focus on the details in the picture. (Einstein s moustache and the wrinkles) and a low spatial frequency is perhaps a signal to you to have your eyes checked.

For more than 10 years, researchers have been working to design hybrid images with accuracy. Some mechanics in the picture help you see Monroe when you are distanced enough from the picture even when you have good eyesight. But, only the outside characters can be perceived from a distance. Your brain is just looking at the broad lines in the picture. In our daily life, this helps one differentiate between a tree and lamppost, or a car and an elephant. But as you get closer to the image, you see more details and distinguish the type of tree or car that you are looking at.
