Rejoice Coffee Drinkers, Study Finds Heart Palpitations Not Caused by CoffeeChris Middlebrooks (Author) Published Date : Jan 27, 2016 22:21 IST
Drinking coffee, tea or even chocolate does not cause heart palpitations, fluttering of the heart or other heartbeat out of sync patterns, reported researches this week.
The new report challenges the belief widely held that caffeinated drinks could cause irregular rhythms in the heart that can then lead to dangerous rhythm disorders in the heart or heart failure. It is also another vindication for the drink as being a safe drink.
Cardiologist Dr. Gregory Marcus from the University of California San Francisco said that it could be time for doctors to take it easy on coffee.
He added that clinical recommendations that advise against the regular drinking of products that are caffeinated to prevent a disturbance of the cardiac rhythm in the heart should be reconsidered.
He concluded by saying we might be unnecessarily discouraging the consumption of products such as chocolate, tea and coffee, that could have cardiovascular benefits.
It was once believed that the start of premature cardiac contractions, that usually have no or mild symptoms like heart palpitations, fluttering or skipped beats, were harmless.
However, new studies associate them with atrial fibrillation, heart failure and other conditions that are dangerous.
Doctors are taught as well that caffeine can be the cause of these disturbances in the heart.
Marcus and his colleagues examined over 1,387 people whom averaged 72 years old that were taking part in another heart study.
Close to 60% said, they consumed some type of product with caffeine on a daily basis. The team looked at coffee, tea or chocolate specifically and did not ask about the energy drinks that are super caffeinated.
They took measurements of premature ventricular contractions as well as premature atrial contractions.
No differences were found in instances of the heart disturbances regardless of the amount of coffee, chocolate or tea that was consumed.
Therefore, researchers concluded that overall, consuming products that are caffeinated each day is not linked with having an increased arrhythmia or ectopy.
