Scientists and researchers are puzzled! Greenland's Mystique Vanishing LakesChris Middlebrooks (Author) Published Date : Jan 24, 2015 10:12 ET
Scientists and researchers are puzzled ever since two lakes in Greenland very oddly and so far without any logical explanation drained billions of gallons of water. One of these two lakes were so large after the drainage, almost a mile-wide basin was the repercussion of the drainage in a time period of just a few weeks.
One other sub-glacial lake has taken the course of being filled and then emptied two times in the last couple of years as published in the independently in two different journals, Nature and The Cryosphere .
The findings were published separately for each lake in the journals Nature and The Cryosphere.
The mile-wide crater has been studied by a professor at Ohio State University and he believes that the findings were catastrophic . He also said in an interview with ABC news that the draining of the lake is indicating to us that the plumbing structure under the ice may be altering because more water is melting away from the surface and flowing into it.
The discovery of the second lake occurred when a team from Cornell University went on mapping Greenland s ice sheet. In the course of the action the team found that the lake is drains and fills again and that generates accumulated heat which can alter the composition of the ice.
This dilemma is further intensified by the overflowing melted water hampering the ice sheet s drainage system. This forms, as researchers call blowouts directing towards drainage.
Howat also said that it is probable that there are more sub-glacial lakes in Greenland which are yet to be discovered. His opinion is that now they are confirmed that such lakes can exist but it is still unknown how many of these lakes are actually there and how much water is contained by them. If there are a lot of these lakes mystically hiding beneath the cool exterior then the drainage of lakes could be another method which melts the ice sheet and contributing the part it plays bringing a rise in the sea level.
