Friday, 16th October, 2015 was special not only for Scott Kelly, the American Astronaut, but also for NASA because Scott Kelly had clocked 383 days living on the ISS through 4 missions, said NASA. Scott Kelly is also the first American astronaut to achieve this feat.
Presently, Kelly has completed almost half of an year long mission aboard the ISS. The one year mission also presents astronauts with an opportunity to understand how the human body reacts during long haul space flights. Parallel studies are being carried out by scientists on earth on astronaut Mark Kelly, who is the identical twin brother of Kelly Scott and a retired astronaut.
According to NASA, Scott Kelly s recent record snaps the earlier record set by Mike Fincke for the longest time spent in space (cumulatively).
On Friday, NASA stated in a press release that it is important that such records are broken since the time spent in space is important and each additional day helps in better understanding of how long duration spaceflights affect human minds and bodies. In turn, this knowledge is critical in advancing NASA s Mars missions.
As per current schedules, Kelly will return to Earth on3 March, as per NASA and he would have completed 522 days in space at that time. On March 27, he launched from Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz rocket with two other cosmonauts. Mikhail Komienko , one of the cosmonauts will also be staying up for the one year mission.
Gennady Padalka, another Russian Cosmonaut holds the world record for the longest duration in orbit. He returned to base on September 12 with 878 days of cumulative stay in space, as stated by the Federal Space Agency of Russia.
Aboard the ISS, at 15,500 miles an hour speed, Scott Kelly is also moving fast towards yet another record which is the single longest flight in space by an American. On October 29, he will be hitting this mark. That would also mark the 216th consecutive day in space for Kelly.
